"One of the great, appealing factors of the quadrille and pas de deux is the tension that is created between individuals (in some cases, master, riders and horses), and the harmonic totality of the whole picture. It is not how physically close the riders and horses are to one another, it is how psychically close the riders are in their philosophy about riding. There is a palpable tension evident in the differences of individuals who compromise or fit together, who form an ensemble for a larger picture. The spectators, whether they realize it or not, are compelled to enlarge their vision from the base measurements fof quantity, to the subtleties of quality."
