QUESTION & ANSWER FORUM: Double-Longe Configuration, 2007
return to the Question & Answer Forum
QUESTION:
My gelding had a habit of spinning in the double lines & wrapping himself. However, this only happens with my trainer - not when I double-longe him. Could it be the configuration of how the lines are hooked up? I just run the clip through the surcingle ring straight to the bit, but she runs each line through one of the lower surcingle rings, then through the bit ring and attaches the clip to an upper ring (the bit ring appears to have some pulley function). In any given week at least one of the horses that she works will spin.

ANSWER:
That is probably your answer, right there. That can happen when the horse is either not prepared enough for double longeing, or if he is very stiff in his poll and hips - or if the trainer doesn't have enough tact. With this draw-rein sort of configuration the longe lines have enormous leverage, and they are most likely too restrictive, so that the horse feels trapped and can't move forward any more, especially if the trainer doesn't have very good hands and doesn't release early enough. It would be interesting to know what - if anything - she is thinking when she rigs the double longe line up this way. It's a rather extreme setup, certainly not something that should be used on most horses.
