QUESTION & ANSWER FORUM: Difficulty with Neutral Pelvis Position in Sitting Trot, 2007
return to the Question & Answer Forum
QUESTION:
I think I do have a problem with pelvic tilting
more back or down and having more of an arched lumbar area, it is
definitely not straight. I can tuck my pelvis/flatten my lower back
but then my thigh is raises up into the wrong position, too high and
rotated more out than in; I can get my thigh in the right position
but then find my back is arched. Very frustrating, not sure how to
conquer this dilemma...

ANSWER:
That's extremely common. Every rider struggles with this for a long time, regardless of gender. The reason behind it is a lack of flexibility in the hip flexors, especially the psoas and iliacus muscles. Our generally sedentary lifestyle bears a large share of the responsibility for it - as well as the fact that our body did not really evolve for the purpose of riding. If you increase the flexibility in your hip flexors and develop the ability to isolate your various muscle groups, so that you can engage your abs, obliques, and back muscles, while relaxing your hips, the problem will greatly diminish and eventually go away.
