QUESTION & ANSWER FORUM: The Volte
return to the Question & Answer Forum

QUESTION:
What is a Volte?

ANSWER:
In classical dressage, the volte is defined as the smallest circle a horse can accommodate with his lateral bend. Traditionally, a volte had a circumference of 12 strides of the inside hind leg. Riding a circle with fewer than 12 strides results in a loss of balance, relaxation, impulsion and collection, since the horse can no longer align his hips and shoulders correctly on the chosen line. With this definition, it becomes apparent that the diameter of the volte will vary with the horse's size and stride length.

If you count the strides in your volte, however, you will see that it is significantly smaller than 10-15 m. 20 years ago in Germany, the volte was defined as having a diameter of 8 strides (6.40m) at First Level and 6 strides (4.80m) at Second Level. With the gradual but steady downsizing of the standards in official dressage, the voltes have become bigger and bigger, to be able to accommodate everybody.
