Although this picture was taken from the left side, covering the right hand, the upright whip shows that the rider is conducting all four reins in the left hand alone, while the right hand carries only the whip. The rider's posture reveals that he is riding the piaffe merely with his abdominal, back, and shoulder muscles, while his legs merely frame the haunches passively and interfere actively only if the horse should slacken in his activity. Very evident are rhythm, impulsion, and collection. Notice also the gentle backwards inclination of the rider's shoulders which transfers more weight onto the haunches and thus leads to a higher degree of collection.
